Ivy Title On Line Sunday At Princeton? Yale Needs Help From Harvard

Nov. 7, 2007

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Both the Yale and Princeton women's soccer teams will have a keen interest in Saturday's Penn-Harvard game in Cambridge, Mass. A Harvard victory would open the door for Sunday's Yale-Princeton winner to earn a share of the Ivy League title. Both teams enter the 1 p.m. kickoff at Princeton Stadium 4-2 in league play, one game behind first-place Penn. Pay-per-view video is available for the game at goprincetontigers.com.

Regardless of the outcome of the Penn-Harvard game, Yale (10-6 overall) will have much to play for on Sunday. A victory over the Tigers (8-7-1) will strengthen the Bulldogs' credentials for an at-large berth to the NCAA College Cup. Penn, by virtue of wins over both Yale and Princeton, has clinched the Ivy's automatic bid.

The Bulldogs are playing their best soccer of the season at an opportune time. They have won three straight games and are 9-2 in their last 11 games. Three of Yale's six losses this fall have come to teams ranked in the SoccerBuzz.com top 30 - No. 3 Portland, No. 5 North Carolina and No. 27 Duke.

Maggie Westfal, who leads Yale in scoring, is second in the Ivy League in both points (21) and goals (9). She has scored a goal in three straight games, including last Sunday's 3-1 win over Brown. Becky Brown, who has also scored in three straight games, is tied for fourth with six goals. Defensively, the Bulldogs have allowed just six goals in Ivy play, which is second to Penn.

Princeton features one of the most dangerous players in the league in Diana Matheson, who missed much of the early season while playing for the Canadian National Team in the Women's World Cup in China. Matheson has six goals and seven assists in only nine games.

Maren Dale has seen a majority of the action in goal for the Tigers and has a 1.23 goals against average.

Yale has won two straight games against Princeton, but the Tigers lead the all-time series 18-11-3.
