PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Eight Bulldog sailors from the coed and women's sailing teams were honored with All-New England honors on Saturday at the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association (NEISA) Awards hosted by Brown following racing at the New England Team Race Championships. Four of the honored Bulldogs are returning All-Americans.
The All-New England selections were made by a panel of coaches representing a variety of NEISA schools. The coaches evaluated the records of the competitors in competition throughout the fall 2007 and spring 2008 seasons. For crew awards, the panel also looked at the crew's technique and impact on boat handling and skipper performance.
The Bulldogs also had two finalists for sailor of the year honors. Sophomore captain and ICSA Single-handed Champion Thomas Barrows (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands/Antilles School) was a finalist for the Sailor of the Year Award, which was won by Harvard senior Kyle Kovacs. Senior Abigail Coplin (Delmar, N.Y./Emma Willard School) was a finalist for the Babineau Trophy honoring the Top Crew in New England, an honor won by Andrew Schneider of Boston College. Barrows and Coplin usually sail together in B Division in coed fleet racing competition.
Two Elis were named to the 2008 All-New England Coed First Team as skippers. Barrows and senior Zachary Brown (San Diego, Calif./University of San Diego High School) were both named to the team and are returning All-American skippers.
Joining Barrows and Brown on the First Team were two Bulldogs who were named to the 2008 All-New England Coed First Team as crews. Coplin and junior Grace Becton (Deer Isle, Maine/Deer Isle-Stonington High School) were both named to the team and are returning All-American crews.
From the women's sailing team, four Bulldogs were named to the All-New England Women's Sailing Team. The four honors for the women's team makes the Bulldog women the most honored women's team in the NEISA district.
Receiving First Team All-New England Skipper selections were juniors Jane Macky (Auckland, New Zealand/Epsom Girls Grammar School) and captain Kate Hagemann (Naples, Fla./Naples High School).
Two Bulldogs were also named to the All-New England Women's Team as crews. Sophomore Marla Menninger (Costa Mesa, Calif./Newport Harbor High School) and freshman Elizabeth Brim (New York, N.Y./Hotchkiss School) were named to the team.
Macky and Menninger were both named to the All-New England Women's Team in 2007 as well.
