NEW HAVEN, Conn. - After an emotional 9-8 overtime win at No. 20 Dartmouth Saturday, No. 14 Yale cannot afford a letdown. The Bulldogs host local rival UConn Wednesday (3:00 p.m., GameTracker).
Yale (5-3, 1-1 Ivy League) had seven different players score Saturday, the second time this season that has happened. The game-winner in overtime came from senior attacker Meredith Callahan (Chatham, N.J.), making her the fifth different player to score a game-winning goal for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs are at their best when they're setting each other up on offense; in Yale's five wins, 22 of their 49 goals (45 percent) have been assisted. In Yale's five losses, just four of their 18 goals (22 percent) have been assisted. Callahan leads the team with 11 helpers, one shy of her career high.
Senior goalkeeper Ellen Cameron (Monkton, Md.) had one of her best outings of the season against the Big Green, making nine saves and holding Dartmouth to a 2-for-11 performance on free-position attempts. For the season Cameron is ninth in the country in goals-against average (7.78).
Yale is 7-0 all-time against UConn, but four of the last five games have been decided by three or fewer goals. Last year's 11-7 Bulldog win was the lone exception. Senior midfielder Lauren Taylor (Manhasset, N.Y.) scored four goals and Cameron made seven saves as Yale outshot UConn 30-19 for the win.
UConn (0-7, 0-2 Big East) has struggled this season, allowing 20 or more goals three times in the last four games. Midfielder Whitney Michele leads the team in goals (15), assists (12) and points (27). Midfielder Katy Ryan has a team-best 18 draw controls and eight caused turnovers.
