Bulldogs Fourth Twice at Head of the Charles

Oct. 21, 2007

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Fourth place finishes in the Championship and Club Eights highlighted a full weekend of racing for Yale at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Cambridge, Mass. Yale also entered a boat in the Championship Fours, which finished 17th. The Bulldogs' 2V placed 26th in the Championship Eights.

In the Championship Eights, the Yale 1V of Taylor Ritzel (stroke), Jamie Redman (seven), Tess Gerrand (six), Catherine Hart (five), Alice Henly (four), Maren McCrea (three), Caroline Nash (two), Christine Glandorf (bow) and Berkley Adrio (cox) recorded a time of 16:22.225. The time put the boat second among all collegiate teams entered in the event and just 0.574 seconds behind third-place Michigan. The fourth place finish matched the Yale 1V's performance from a year ago. Boats from US Rowing (15:26.572) and London Training Center (15:39.412) took first and second respectively.

"Our varsity rowed a solid race," Head Coach Will Porter commented. "There are plenty of things we can work on, but it's a good start to the season."

The Yale 2V took 26th in the Championship Eights, after incurring 20 seconds in penalties for missing the white buoy twice. The boat's unadjusted time of 17:07.728 would have been good enough for 15th place.

"It's good that we're able to do these early season regattas, so that we're able to see the challenge ahead of us," Porter added.

In the Championship Fours, the Bulldogs' Four finished 17th in a time of 19:33.892. Stanford (fifth), Brown (seventh) and Tulsa (eighth) were the top three collegiate finishers in the event.

On Saturday in the Club Eights, the Yale boat snagged fourth, completing the course in 17:33.105. Tennessee (17:16.740), Alabama (17:20.524) and Harvard (17:29.772) made up the top three.

The Bulldogs will compete in the Princeton Chase on Oct. 28 in Princeton, N.J.
