Mullan attended City Honors High School where she has rowed for four years and was the captain of her rowing team. In 2004 she won the junior coxed four at the US National Championships. In addition to rowing for her high school, Mullan rowed for the famous Westside Rowing Club. She raced at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta in 2004 and 2005, finishing third and fourth respectively in the youth 8.

At Yale, she rowed in the boat that won the Collegiate Eights event at the 2006 Head of the Charles Regatta. She is a freshman in Silliman College.
