Charles has been swimming for many years although probably spent more time hiding under water and at the walls for most of those years. His most memorable swimming moment was placing 9th in the 50 free and thus just out of finals at the Florida High School State Championships, which made him angrily cement his decision to swim at the college level. Charles chose Yale because of its excellence in academics and a chance to commit and excel in swimming.

Outside of swimming, Charles enjoys listening to bluegrass music, playing the mandolin, and recycling. He plans to double major in Environmental Studies and International Studies.
