Rieger, the 2006 team captain, started 17 games at midfield and tied for second on the team in assists with three. His long pass led to Gage Hills' winning goal in the 1-0 victory over Princeton that helped earn Yale a share of the Ivy League title in the regular season finale. Rieger had a breakthrough season in 2004 when he started 16 games. His first career goal was the only goal in a 1-0 victory over Hartford. He added assists against Clemson and Princeton. His first career start came in the 2003 season opener against Wisconsin. At Lawrence Central High School, he captained the soccer team as both a junior and a senior. The team captured the conference championship in each of his four years, and was also crowned sectional champions in 2002. In both his junior and senior years, Rieger earned NSCAA all-regional honors, first team all-state, all-district, all-county, all-conference, academic all-state, and Indianapolis Metro "super team" recognition. He also was a member of the Region II Olympic Development team.
