Bulldogs Face Tough Competition at Adams Cup :: Freshman McCarthy Leads Bulldog Golfers

Newport, R.I. - The Yale men's golf team finished in 14th place out of 15 teams at the Adams Cup in Newport, R.I., on Wednesday. Tricky greens and rough winds stifled the Bulldogs as they competed against a very tough field in their opening tournament of the season.

Junior Colby Moore commented on the course conditions. "The whole course was dry, fast, and firm," he said. "The wind also blew at a steady 25-30 mph during each round."

Still, despite the weather, Moore believed that the Bulldogs underperformed. "We did not play up to our potential. We were playing very well in our qualifying rounds and the rounds that we shot were shocking. We were playing much better going into the event than our scores indicate."

Wichita State University won the event with a team total of 890. Southern Mississippi came in second with 901, with host Rhode Island only one shot back in third place.

Yale shot 948 and finished 20 strokes ahead of Brown, the only other Ivy team competing in the tournament.

Freshman Thomas Mccarthy led all Bulldog golfers with 231 over the three rounds. He finished in 35th place.

Colby Moore tied for 53rd with 238 and Ben Wescoe finished tied for 60th with 241.

Taylor Hakes and Brandon Marick both shot 242 and tied for 64th place.

The Bulldogs are next in action when they host the Macdonald Cup at the Yale Golf Course on October 6-7.
