David Paterson Golf Technology Center Opens At Payne Whitney Gymnasium

Saturday, May 3, 2008 marked an extensive upgrade for the Yale golf program and Payne Whitney Gymnasium. The David Paterson Technology Center was dedicated in honor of longtime Yale golf coach, Dave Paterson.

The David Paterson Golf Technology Center will be dedicated this coming Saturday, May 3, in honor of men's golf coach Dave Paterson. Paterson is retiring after 33 years at Yale. The event will begin at 6:00 p.m., with the speaking program at 6:45 p.m. Speaking at the event will be Paterson, athletic director Tom Beckett, men's golf captain Andrew Denenberg, women's golf captain Ellen Brophy and lead donor Harry You. There will be a reception following the speaking program.

Hernandez and Moore Earn All-Ivy Honors

The Bulldogs took home a pair of All-Ivy honors after this past weekend's Ivy League Championship. Senior Joseph Hernandez and Junior Colby Moore each took home the award. Moore received the honor for the second year in a row, while Hernandez took home his first award.

Yale Leads Nation with 28 NCAA Public Recognition Awards Again

Yale had 28 teams honored by the NCAA with Public Recognition Awards for high Academic Progress Rate scores Thursday, four more than any other school in the country. This is the third year in a row Yale has led the nation in teams recognized for high APR scores.

Bulldogs Take Second at Ivy League Championship

The Bulldogs struggled on the final day at the Ivy League Championship and relinquished their lead to Columbia. The Lions (900) played solid golf, shooting the lowest score of the day. They were able to gain back the two shots they started down to Yale (909) and nine more for cushion. Defending Ivy Champs Penn (916) rounded out the top three. Yale seemed to be sitting in a good position coming into Sunday, but they struggled to keep that momentum, shooting 16 strokes higher than yesterday afternoon.

Yale Leads Ivy League Championship After Two Rounds

The Bulldogs' hopes of a bid to the NCAA tournament are looking brighter after day one at the Ivy League Championship. It is a tight-knit top three, however, with Columbia (596) and Penn (602) just one and seven shots back, respectively. Yale (595) started up eight shots on Columbia after the first round, but the Lions came charging back to shoot a second round low of +9. Harvard (612), who was only five shots behind Yale after round one, fell apart in round two and is now 17 shots behind the leader.

The Yale men's golf team will head to the Galloway National Golf Club in New Jersey to compete for the Ivy League Championship this weekend. That's not all the Bulldogs will be playing for, though. The NCAA's recent change to a system that awards at-large bids to the NCAA tournament based on national rankings, as opposed to district rankings, places even more emphasis on this weekend's event. With at-large bids tougher to come by, the automatic NCAA tournament berth that comes from winning the Ivy championship becomes even more valuable.

Bulldogs Win the New England Division I Championship

The Bulldogs are peaking at just the right time. After a disappointing finish at their own tournament last weekend, Yale (583) came storming back to win the New England Division 1 Championships by four shots over Binghamton (587). Sacred Heart finished in third with a score of 596. The most important names for Yale this weekend, though, were Harvard, Dartmouth and Brown. These three other Ivy League teams finished fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.

Yale came out of the gates firing on Saturday to lead the New England Championships, posting three scores of even-par or better for a team score of 290. Yale leads Binghamton by two strokes (292) and Sacred Heart by four (294). Other notables are Ivy League opponents Harvard, Brown, and Dartmouth who sit in fourth through sixth place, respectively.

A year ago, the New England championship in Providence, R.I., would have been a big chance for the men's golf team to get into the NCAA regionals. This year, however, since the NCAA changed the rules and went to a system that awards at-large bids based on national rankings as opposed to district rankings, the New Englands will serve more as a warm-up event for next week's Ivy championship, when the Bulldogs could claim an automatic NCAA bid.

Moore Finishes Third, Bulldogs Eighth at the Yale Spring Opener

Junior Colby Moore improved his ranking Sunday to finish tied for third after finishing yesterday in 15th. In doing so, he helped Yale climb five spots to end up tied for eighth place with Ivy League opponent Cornell. Harvard, Yale's other league rival, took first in the tournament by shooting a team score of 585, nine shots better than Yale's 594.

The Bulldogs finished round one with a score of 301, tied for thirteenth with the University of Massachusetts Lowell on Saturday. It is a close field though, and Yale is only seven shots off the teams tied for first: Drexel, Temple, and Cornell, who shot rounds of 294.

Bulldogs Finish 14th at Lacrosse Homes Collegiate Invitational

In the final round of the Lacrosse Homes Collegiate Invitational the Bulldogs were able to shave four strokes off their score from Saturday, but it was not enough. Yale dropped two spots to finish tied with Brown for 14th. The Bulldogs and Bears shot identical rounds on Saturday and on Sunday to finish with a score of 632. The winner, Longwood, finished 34 strokes ahead of the Bulldogs with a two-day score of 598.
