CAMDEN, N.J. - The Yale lightweight varsity eight had an impressive showing at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association championships on Saturday on the Cooper River. The Bulldogs finished fifth in the Grand Final with a time of 5:51.813. Cornell won the national championship for the second straight year, completing the course in 5:46.344, a little more than a second in front of second-place Harvard.
In the boat for Yale were Daniel Ensslen, Mikkel Krenchel, Nick Panza, James Johnson, Richard Littlehale, Chris Blum, Gregory Hopkins, Peter Reiser and coxswain Emily Cleveland.
The finish was an improvement from the May 13 Eastern Sprints, where the Bulldogs failed to qualify for the Grand Final and placed seventh overall.
Yale's freshman four of Noah McColl, Brendan McCook, Michael Jonas, Jeremy Hopkins and coxswain Stephen Dobeck earned a silver medal, finishing second to California with a time of 6:34.628. The Bears came in at 6:28.986.
In the varsity pair Grand Final, the Yale pair of Roman Rezanowicz and Alexander Rothmeier placed fourth with a time of 6:53.101. Temple won in 6:47.162 followed by Wisconsin (6:48.923) and Columbia (6:51.646).
Yale's second varsity, which was competing against heavyweight boats, including the Yale heavyweight second varsity, finished sixth in the Petite Final with a time of 5:55.941, only a little more than five seconds behind Harvard's winning boat. In the boat for the Bulldogs were Foster Hays, Andrew Kaiser, Simon Goldman, Joseph Pappalardo, Peter Barkett, Brendan Stallard, Nathan Bruker, Philip Lang and coxswain Manuel Gonzales-Luna.
