Three Bulldogs Make World Championships Roster

July 25, 2007

NEW HAVEN, Conn.--Three Yale men's rowers, Charlie Cole, Peter Reiser and Alex Rothmeier have earned places on the roster that will represent the United States at the FISA World Rowing Under 23 Championships. Cole earned a spot in the three-seat on the American eight, while Reiser and Rothmeier will be in the lightweight four. In addition, Jamie Redman of the Yale women's crew made the U.S. team in the women's eight. The competition begins Thursday in Strathclyde, Great Britain.

The team, which consists of 41 rowers from across the country, will compete in 10 events in Scotland. The 16 oarsmen in the eights were selected after completing the U.S. under-23 training camp in Hanover, N.H., at the end of June. The under-23 national team is the top developmental level between college and the senior national team.

Cole, a rising senior, made the U.S. team for the second straight year; he was a member of the quadruple sculls crew in 2006. With the Bulldogs in 2006-07, he sat in the six-seat on the varsity eight that went undefeated in dual race competition, including beating archrival Harvard for the first time since 1999.

Reiser, the 2007-08 lightweight crew captain, will be in the three-seat in the lightweight four boat. He was in the bow seat for the Yale crew that took fifth in the varsity eight at the IRA Regatta.

Rothmeier, a rising senior, will sit in the bow on the lightweight four. He rowed in several different events for the Bulldogs last season, finishing fourth (along with Roman Rezanowicz) in the Grand Final of the varsity pair at IRAs.

Mike Callahan of the University of Washington will coach the U.S. men's team in Scotland, while Dartmouth's Topher Bordeau will assist him. Princeton (six) and Washington (four) were the only other schools with as many selections as Yale.
