At Republic High School, Michael captained his baseball team and lettered on his cross country team. He won Academic All-Conference honors in both sports during both his junior and senior years. He was also honored as an Academic All-Star by the Springfield News-Leader.

Michael is a senior in Timothy Dwight College studying English. In 2005, he rowed in the 2V boat that beat Harvard in the 140th Yale-Harvard regatta.
