At New Trier, Charles lettered two years in basketball and volleyball. He also captained his varsity volleyball team. He was named a conference scholar athlete for both sports all four years of high school, and his basketball team won sectional and regional championships his junior year. He is also an Eagle Scout and holds a black belt in Shotokan karate.

At Yale, Charles is a sophomore in Ezra Stiles College. He intends to major in English.
