During his junior year at Yale, Matt was a member of the varsity eight that finished sixth at IRAs. In his sophomore year he rowed in the Yale 2V boat that beat Harvard in the 140th Yale-Harvard regatta.

At Upper Canada College, Matthew also played rugby and football. In 2002, he was selected to the Canada junior B team in crew, and in 2003 he was awarded the Robin Younger Award for senior oarsman of the year. He is also an Ontario Merit Scholar.

At Yale, Matthew is a senior Political Science major in Calhoun College. He hopes to be a journalist.
