GRAD-PRO SUMMER SOFTBALL REGISTRATION INFORMATION
Entries must be submitted prior to the deadline of
Wednesday, May 20 @ 4PM.
Welcome to the Graduate-Professional Summer Softball League. This long standing league provides a wonderful opportunity for Yale students and employees to enjoy a low-key, friendly, and social athletic opportunity. Our 'umpireless' league depends heavily on fair play, sportsmanship and mutual respect to ensure a fun experience for all. Please consider this carefully when you register because our competitive atmosphere is very casual and may not be to your team's liking. Teams are asked to identify a preferred playing day and in most cases that request is honored during schedule. However, recently captains have encouraged us to schedule games against as many different opponents as possible which could result in games scheduled beyond your requested day. All games are scheduled to begin each weekday at 5:30 PM on fields located in the Yale Bowl Complex near the corner of Derby and Central Avenues.
SPECIAL NOTES: 1). The league begins play on May 29
and the season concludes in early August. 2). Fields have been
reserved for weekdays with the most fields available on Monday
and Thursday and the fewest on Tuesday and Wednesday. 3). Teams
may list preferred playing days but in order to ensure a balanced
schedule teams may be asked to play on other days. 4). Please
register and pay your fee early. We may be forced to limit the
number of teams accepted into the league. Teams registering after
May 12 are not guaranteed a spot but may be placed on a waiting
list and could be included if other teams forfeit out of the league.
5). If you are uncertain whether you can field a team or if your
players may be unhappy playing a casual softball then join a more
competitive local city league.
Captains should list their telephone numbers and address, and the team's name and department on the registration form. Also indicate the league and playing day preferences. If necessary indicate any special requests in the 'Note to the Scheduler' line -- especially days your team can not play. Finally, list all players on the roster. Additional players may be added during the season, but their names must be submitted to the Intramural Office no less than 24 hours before the team's next scheduled game.
Each team consists of ten fielders but the team may start a game with a minimum of eight fielders. If the team starts the game with eight fielders/batters then the ninth position in the batting order is an automatic out. Substitutions are unlimited, therefore: if a team limits its batting order to ten positions a substituted player may reenter the batting order at any position after one complete rotation of the original batting position; or, if a team uses an unlimited batting order all batters must play the field for at least one inning sometime during the game. NOTE: Co-recreation teams consist of a maximum of six men and a minimum of four women fielders, however, a shorthanded corec team must play with at least three woman fielders. A corec team may not substitute a man for a woman's position. A corec team utilizing an unlimited batting order must maintain the 3:2 ratio of men to women in the batting order.
The season begins on Tuesday, May 27. All games are played
on weekday afternoons at 5:30 PM unless otherwise noted.
There are no umpires. Rescheduling games must be kept to a minimum
and any changes must be reported to the Intramural Office at 432-2487.
Nevertheless, if both opponents are unable to reschedule a game
postponed due to weather then it will be recorded as a tie. If
a team wishes a non-weather related reschedule and their opponent
is unable to accommodate the change then the team requesting the
change will be accessed a loss with no consequence to the forfeit
fee or to playoff. Unreported changes result in loss of forfeit
fee for both teams.
After the first forfeit a team will lose its deposit. After the second forfeit it is expelled from the league and any remaining games are automatic wins for the opponents. Any team that forfeits during the regular season may be ineligible from playoffs.
There will be NO Captain's Meetings for the summer season. Instead all captains will be emailed a copy of the notes and schedule for review. Please direct any questions to 203-432-2487.
