Dear Alumni & Friends of Yale Athletics,

We are very proud of our tradition of excellence in athletics and academics at Yale University. We have enjoyed great success on the playing fields and in the classroom and are very proud of the accomplishments of our student-athletes. We greatly appreciate your part in helping make these accomplishments possible.

Yale University is unconditionally committed to NCAA and Ivy League rules compliance. As a member of these associations, Yale is responsible for educating our alumni, parents of Yale student-athletes, and friends of Yale Athletics about important conference and NCAA regulations.

This information is intended to be a quick reference to guide you through the NCAA rules that apply to our "athletics representatives." Not all applicable situations are included, so please call if you have additional questions. Yale appreciates your interest and support but reminds you that inappropriate or inadvertent action on your part can jeopardize the eligibility of prospective and current student-athletes.

Contact with Prospects

Prohibited Actions

While our coaches are always interested in learning of new prospects, there are strict NCAA guidelines prohibiting much of what you can do with prospects. Remember, Yale University is subject to penalties for violations committed by any booster.

Only Yale University athletic department staff may be involved in the recruitment process. As a representative of athletics interests you are prohibited from:

Calling or writing or having personal contact either on or off campus with a prospect or his/her parents or legal guardians to solicit his/her participation in Yale athletics with limited exceptions. If you are a member of the Yale Alumni Schools Committee and are assigned to interview students who are also athletes, you may contact the student for these purposes only. ASC members may not have contact with prospects whom they are not assigned to interview.

Contacting a prospect's coach, principal, or guidance counselor to evaluate the prospect.

Visiting the prospect's school to pick up film or transcripts pertaining to the evaluation of a prospect.

Providing a benefit to high school, prep school, or community college coaches.

Making arrangements for the prospect or the prospect's relatives or friends to receive money or financial aid of any kind.

What you can do!

As a booster you are permitted to:

Join a Sport Association or the Ray Tompkins Association.
Identify outstanding student-athletes. If you know of prospective student-athletes, please call, email or send information such as newspaper articles to the coach. They will take it from there.

Provide lodging, meals and transportation to coaches when they come to your community to contact and evaluate prospects.

Attend high school or two year college athletic contests or other events where prospects may compete on their own. However, you may not contact the prospect or the prospect's parents or guardians.

Continue existing friendships with families of prospects or enrolled student-athletes but you may not attempt to recruit the prospect.

Once a recruit has notified the Office of Admissions that they plan to attend Yale, the athletics department staff may assist the student with identifying summer jobs or internships that are paid at the going rate. Please let us know if you have job opportunities available in your area.
